Michael D. Dale
President, CEO and Chairman of the Board
Michael D. Dale has served as President and CEO of ATS Medical since joining the company in October 2002. He assumed the additional responsibilities of Chairman of the Board in May 2004. With more than 20 years experience in the medical device industry, Mr. Dale came to ATS Medical from Endocardial Solutions, Inc., St. Paul, where he was Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Global Sales for Cyberonics, Inc., Houston, and Managing Director of Cyberonics Europe S.A., Brussels. He has held marketing, sales and product management positions at St. Jude Medical, Inc., St. Paul, and St. Jude Medical Europe, Brussels. He began his career in sales at American Edwards Laboratories, Inc. (CVS and Critical Care Divisions), Lexington, Kentucky, and Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Dale serves on the board of directors of Neuronetics, Inc., Philadelphia. He holds a bachelors degree from California Polytechnic State University.

Astrid M. Berthe
Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance
Astrid M. Berthe was appointed Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance for ATS Medical in August, 2007. She was previously the Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs for ATS Medical Tissue Operations. Over a 20 year career, Ms. Berthe has held leadership positions in the areas of Quality Systems, Regulatory, Compliance, Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, and Regulatory Affairs at Baxter Healthcare, Medtronic and Isotis Orthobiologics. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Science and Industrial Engineering.

Thad Coffindaffer
Vice President, Sales
Thad Coffindaffer was Central Area Director for ATS Medical in Dallas, Texas before becoming Vice President, Sales in October 2007. As Vice President, Sales, he is primarily responsible for leading the company’s efforts in selling its cardiac surgery products and services in the United States as well as strategic planning, employee development and achieving revenue and profitability goals.  Prior to joining ATS Medical in 2003, he was Western Region Sales Manager at Thoratec Corporation/Thermo Cardiosystems, Inc. and has had extensive sales experience at General Electric Medical Systems where he was a sales representative and a national account manager. He has a bachelor of science degree from Wichita State University and an MBA-marketing and finance degree from Indiana University.

James L. Cox, M.D.
Medical Director
Dr. Cox trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery under Dr. David Sabiston at Duke University where he remained on the faculty as an Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor of Surgery. Dr. Cox subsequently became the first Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, a position he held for 14 years. In July, 2000, he retired as the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. He has been the President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Editor of the Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Editor of the Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery, a Director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and a member of the Surgical Study Section at the NIH. 

Dr. Cox is best known for his work in the field of cardiac arrhythmia surgery and the development of the Cox-Maze Procedure which is considered the “gold standard’ for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Cox has trained many prominent surgeons in America, Europe and Asia and has served as the Guest Lecturer, Visiting Professor or Guest Surgeon over 200 times and in over 30 countries. His has received many honors during his career but two stand out. In June 2000, Dr. Cox was honored in Paris, France as one of only thirty “Pioneers in Cardiothoracic Surgery” for the First 50 Years of the Specialty. In April 2005, Dr. Cox joined Dr. Michael DeBakey as only the second American cardiac surgeon ever elected into the Russian Academy of Medical Science. On July 1, 2006, Dr. Cox became the Emeritus Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. In December 2007, Dr. Cox assumed the role of Medical Director for ATS Medical.

David R. Elizondo
Vice President, Research, Development, and Clinical Affairs
David R. Elizondo joined ATS Medical in October 2006. As Vice President, Research and Development, he has broad and practical experience and exposure to the research, development and operational functions of cardiovascular device design and manufacturing; particularly with respect to mechanical and tissue based prosthetic heart valves. Before joining ATS Medical, he was the Director, New Business Development at Boston Scientific. He has also served as the Director, Bioprosthetic Devices for Cryolife, Inc. and held various positions and responsibilties at St. Jude Medical.

Maria Koullick, PhD
Senior Director, Clinical Affairs
Maria Koullick joined ATS Medical in May 2009 as the Senior Director of Clinical Affairs. She has broad experience in clinical research, health economics, quality assurance, and biomedical engineering. Over a 20-year career, Maria has developed expertise in designing and executing scientifically sound trials in support of Premarket Applications and 510(k) submissions in medical devices in Classes II and III including cardiovascular and neurological applications. Before joining ATS Medical, she held leadership positions at Medtronic, Inc., in the Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management and Neurological divisions. Maria holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Organic Chemistry and a Doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering followed by a post doctoral study at the National Cardiovascular Center in Japan.

Michael R. Kramer
Chief Financial Officer
Michael R. Kramer was Senior Director of Finance and then Acting Chief Financial Officer at ATS Medical before becoming Chief Financial Officer in 2007. Prior to joining ATS Medical, he was an independent financial consultant to the company. His career includes Controller at CABG Medical, Inc., a cardiovascular device manufacturer, and Corporate Finance Manager at Ecolab, Inc., a developer and marketer of products and services to the hospital, foodservice, healthcare and industrial markets. He also was a manager in the assurance and advisory services practice at the professional services firm of Ernst & Young LLP.

Henry J.M. Kuper
Director, Sales Operations for Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Henry J.M. Kuper was appointed to the ATS Medical executive team as Director, Sales Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in October, 2007. He is responsible for the strategic, operational, sales and marketing activities in EMEA. He was previously the ATS Director of Sales for Eastern Europe and Benelux. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Kuper has held international leadership positions in Sales and Marketing at Eli Lilly & Company and St. Jude Medical, Inc and his geographic responsibilities have included Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. He holds a Bachelors Degree in General Nursing, Anesthesia, and followed MBA courses in Economics at the Herriot Watt University in Edinburg.

Michael Reinhardt
Vice President, Global Marketing
Michael E. Reinhardt was appointed to the position of Vice President of Marketing in May 2009. He comes to ATS Medical with over 20 years of diversified medical device sales and marketing experience including general surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, interventional cardiology and most recently cardiac surgery. In his current role Mr. Reinhardt is responsible for leading the Company’s global marketing activities ensuring their overall execution and ongoing contribution to the revenue and profitability objectives. In addition, his role will also be responsible for leading and participating in mission critical planning activities including strategic and technology portfolio planning processes. Prior to joining ATS Medical, he served in senior marketing management level positions at other notable medical technology companies including Ethicon Endosurgery, Boston Scientific/Scimed, and St. Jude Medical. He holds a bachelor of art degree in Marketing from Ohio University and an MBA degree in General Business from Baruch College.

Craig A. Swandal
Vice President, Operations
Craig A. Swandal was appointed Vice President, Operations in August of 2008. Prior to joining ATS Medical Mr. Swandal was the Senior Vice President of Corporate Operations for GyrusACMI, a leader in the development and manufacture of minimally invasive surgical instruments. He has over 25 years of progressive operations management experience in the medical and electronics technology fields at GyrusACMI, Honeywell, and Unisys. He is a well respected leader in the implementation of Lean and Six Sigma systems. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Concordia University.
